Statue of Chopin, who was a Polish pianist and composer. During the communist era in Poland, the music of Chopin was banned as being far too inspirational and dangerous.

During his life, Chopin was pursued by Chopin Amandine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, Baroness Dudevant, better known by her pseudonym George Sand. She was a well renown French Romantic writer who carried on numerous love affairs, and for many years she supported Chopin and the two of them had a tumultuous relationship. When Chopin died in 1849 he requested that Mozart's Requiem be sung at his funeral. However, Mozart's Requiem had many parts that were supposed to be sung by women, and The Madeleine Cathedral had never permitted female singers in its choir.

The funeral was delayed for several weeks until the church relented and granted Chopin's wish. The female vocalists, however, were hidden behind a black curtain.
